皮克斯前后收获了9座奥斯卡最佳动画长片奖，然而全球累计票房超过135亿美元的皮克斯动画在中国市场的表现力一直欠佳。自2003年起，共有15部动画电影在国内上映，超过2亿元票房的只有4部，国内总票房约合4亿美元，远逊于全球市场表现。皮克斯为何在中国市场水土不服？新京报记者采访业内动画片研究专家解惑。
主题有时过于成人化
在从事多年动画片文化研究的票房专家看来，对于国内观众相对陌生或晦涩的成人化主题是皮克斯动画在中国“水土不服”的主要原因之一，而国内动画片行情更主打低幼向。“国产动画影片中，如《喜羊羊》和《熊出没》系列大部分都是针对儿童制作，主题简单角色单一，也符合中国家长与儿童合家欢的观影方式，几乎每一部票房都是过亿甚至几亿元。反观皮克斯动画的立意往往更加深刻，《寻梦环游记》以墨西哥和亡灵世界为主题，探讨亲情和死亡，奇迹式高票房其实赚的是成年观众的眼泪。对于像《头脑特工队》‘脑洞大开’的形式和叙事也对于中国观众相对陌生，虽然制作精良，但这对于以儿童带动的家庭观影群体并不占优势。”
相比之下，美国另一家动画公司照明娱乐的低龄、卖萌、合家欢路线，则更加适合国内观众。照明娱乐出品的《神偷奶爸2》和《神偷奶爸3》的中国票房分别为3.23亿和10.38亿元，衍生电影《小黄人大眼萌》收获了4.36亿元票房，《爱宠大机密》则有3.89亿元票房。
缺乏原创，续集来凑
皮克斯动画续集频出也是在国内票房不理想的另一重要原因。比如在前作《玩具总动员》1和2没有引进中国市场的前提下，对于《玩具总动员》3的接受度自然不会高，很难出现良好票房。
以原创起家的皮克斯在2006年被迪士尼收购后制作的大量续集作品，质量参差不齐，经常被批评破坏了原有画风和世界观，甚至有只为了开发周边而制作的《赛车总动员2》与凑3D噱头的《赛车总动员3》。“当吃老本代替了技术革新，原创变为受限于母公司迪士尼的中庸叙事战略，皮克斯更面临着忠实观众的不满。”
